Creating Toolkits for Great Public Spaces

with Community Solutions Network, Evergreen

The Community Solutions Network wanted to accelerate urban development solutions in the public space realm, to address real community needs, improve lives and build capacity using data and connected technology. A suite of actionable toolkits for municipal and community leaders across Canada was conceived as a tool towards this goal.

Acting as the lead concept designer, writer and researcher, I took a user-centred approach to the research and design, building on the success of a previous suite of resources I authored around community broadband. Through a collaborative and iterative design process, I combined desk research with expert interviews to surface key concepts and themes. I then translated these into friendly, accessible content and actionable, easy to use tools.

The final suite of Practitioner’s Toolkits —Reimagining Public Spaces—explored “New Shared Mobility Solutions”, “Accessible Public Spaces for All”, “Technology-Based Solutions for Resilience” and “Green Energy Solutions”. These toolkits, along with a previous suite I created (focused on Community Broadband), have become some of the most popular resources accessed on the Community Solutions Portal.
